  • It sounds like everyone but mods should be able to see voters. But of course they will use straw accounts. What if only votes on your own post/comment were revealed to you? Like some pointed out, they are already not anonymous to anyone who wants to try hard enough to get the data because of federation. So the question is who do we want to be able to see that data easily? It’s a GUI modification in any case. Who are we making the gui modification for?

    It’s true. That box has the utility of the highest utility cable in it. Which means it’s a lot. Worth taking up space under a bed you aren’t using. Anti-horder culture goes too far. It’s more complicated than dogmatically throwing away everything or keeping everything. Don’t throw away things with real utility. Civilization is built on accumulated utility in durable goods.

  • For this user base it is the right answer. So many petty downvoters. On my site I’m considering a rule that would make it so you can’t be the vote that casts a comment into the negative without giving a reason, and then that reason would be turned into a comment. If something is worth downvoting then it is worth explaining why someone is wrong. If you can’t do that maybe you shouldn’t downvote. I don’t think you should have to do that every time. But if a comment is going to go negative someone should step up to the plate and bother to articulate. That way a comment can’t get hidden away from the public just because a petty mob that can’t even present an argument sees it as convenient if certain information disappears.

    So in that case the downvoter who crossed it into the negative would not be anonymous.

    Exercise doesn’t lose weight. Weight is 99% controlled by diet. Exercise will make you not feel like shit so you don’t use food as a dopamine hit. Which is why moderate exercise is better for weight loss. If your workout is making you feel like shit, that might be good for fitness and performance, but it still won’t lose weight faster, and now you are eating more to support recovery.

    So there are two pathways exercise can impact weight.

    Exercise -> psychology -> diet -> weight
    Exercise -> calorie consumption -> weight

    The first one just happens to be more impact because the second one does almost nothing at all. Any useful pathway has to hit diet because that’s 99% of weight (at least of the factors you have control over).

  • Maybe people doing AI development who want the option of running local models.

    But baking AI into all consumer hardware is dumb. Very few want it. saas AI is a thing. To the degree saas AI doesn’t offer the privacy of local AI, networked local AI on devices you don’t fully control offers even less. So it makes no sense for people who value convenience. It offers no value for people who want privacy. It only offers value to people doing software development who need more playground options, and I can go buy a graphics card myself thank you very much.
