I just want a button that rewinds 10-15s, turns on subtitles, and then turns them off when it catches up again. It’s a pattern I do manually with some regularity.

I suppose with Jellyfin/OSS, this is something I could implement myself if I was so inclined…

It’s maybe not that bad for a “normal” person, but Bill Nye was a real hero to a lot of young folks, be they aspiring STEM types, science enthusiasts, or just curious people. So to see him sell out — abandoning scientific integrity for a quick buck — was pretty disheartening.

Immich looks particularly good to me.

It is! Been running it for a few years now and I love it.

The local ML and face detection are awesome, and not too resource intensive — i think it took less than a day to go through maybe 20k+ photos and 1k+ videos, and that was on an N100 NUC (16GB).

Works seamlessly across my iPhone, my android, and desktop.

Exactly — this is ~10GB every 6 hours (which is probably a reasonable amount of time to run a backup while not interfering with active Internet use).

Basically the only backup-worthy content I generate is casual photos and videos, and these are nowhere near that size (Immich database backups also take up a bit but I could certainly be smarter about how I handle these backups).

We “only” have ~35Mbps upload, but that’s plenty since the initial backup was the only large transfer. Daily backup transfers are generally pretty small for me.

But getting the initial transfer done locally was definitely important for my use case!

Yeah. My solution is raspberry pi w/WireGuard + HDD at inlaws. Initial backup was done locally, nightly backups rsync’d over (I don’t generate a ton of data, so it’s mostly just photos from my phone).

For very simple tasks you can usually blindly log in and run commands. I’ve done this with very simple tasks, e.g., rebooting or bringing up a network interface. It’s maybe not the smartest, but basically, just type root, the root password, and dhclient eth0 or whatever magic you need. No display required, unless you make a typo…

In your specific case, you could have a shell script that stops VMs and disables passthrough, so you just log in and invoke that script. Bonus points if you create a dedicated user with that script set as their shell (or just put in the appropriate dot rc file).

As darkly humorous as this is, I believe “out of network” doesn’t apply to ACA compliant health insurance for an ER visit — so even if this happened to a normie, it would ostensibly be covered.

EulerOS, a Linux distro, was certified UNIX.

But OS X, macOS, and at least one Linux distro are/were UNIX certified.

The network gear I manage is only accessible via VPN, or from a trusted internal network…

…and by the gear I manage, I mean my home network (a router and a few managed switches and access points). If a doofus like me can set it up for my home, I’d think that actual companies would be able to figure it out, too.

Add to that photo editing (as much as GIMP is great…). I would guess DAW and video editing would fall under that category, too…and good luck finding many AAA open source games.

Same, an R4 with an i5 4670k I built in grad school. It’s my ham radio computer now, as happy running Debian as the day I built it.

Remote backup server would be my suggestion.

Configure it with a VPN to talk to your home network and set it up at a trusted friend’s or family’s place.

I do this with a raspberry pi and an external HDD that takes daily/weekly/monthly snapshots, with daily rsync. Works nicely for me.

If the minimum wage was a comfortable living wage — like it should be, in my and many other folks’ opinion — then it wouldn’t matter. One person’s excess isn’t a problem, unless it’s at the expense of someone else (which, you know, is kinda the case…).
