I’m somewhat ashamed to admit it, but back before he did “The Apprentice”, I’ll admit I was somewhat fascinated by Trump as a business “mogul”. I read at least 5 of his books starting with “Art of the Deal”. Here are some highlights I remember:

• He constantly bragged about deals in which he completely fucked someone over. Not once did he acknowledge it - at all. It’s like it never entered his mind. Or, that the more he fucked someone over, the more proud he was.

• He bragged about never preparing for speeches. He likes to completely wing it every time - which I guess is obvious.

• He claimed to never eat lunch. Too busy “making deals” he said.

• He used to be very good friends with the Clintons. Went to their parties often. Spoke very highly of them.

• Didn’t mention Jeffrey Epstein at all. You know, like all those pictures of them together might have been a secret?

• Talked about times when he was flat broke or in the hole and how he needed to fake that he was rich to keep up appearances so people would want to do deals with him. I remember one paragraph where he was walking into a building in NY with Ivanka and pointed out a homeless person and told her “See that man. He has more money than me.”

Long before he entered politics, based on those books, I knew Donald Trump was a despicable piece of shit.

“The Projects” is a term used to describe government provided (or subsidized) housing for poor people. The term is generally used to indicate “a place in a city where income is low and crime is usually high”.

The javelin was officially redesigned in 1986 to limit its distance to keep it in the field, and to ensure it doesn’t land flat. They are likely only counting post-redesign throws.

The consultancy I used to work for in the late 90s would have crucified any developer that didn’t write “a data abstraction layer that allows you to pop off the original db and substitute a different one later”.

How many times in my 25 year career have I swapped out the database (and been thankful for such an abstraction layer)? 0 times.

This portal is a dumb idea, but most developers know you don’t let on when a hack is attempted and you detect it. It’s common to return a “success” message in hopes the “hacker” stops trying and moves on. Meanwhile, you log the attempt (and don’t actually cancel a voter registration).

Though, I don’t have high hopes the state actually built a secure site here.

Dear Mr. High & Mighty, I’ve actually seen all those things - on UL certified devices.

But again, not my point. My point was a lamp isn’t complicated enough for the UL to charge so much that the price goes up 10x. If they are charging that much, there should be tons of competitors trying to get a piece of that pie. If they aren’t charging alot, then many of the products on Amazon, that are often certified by authorities in other countries, would also get UL certified. It has all the hallmarks of a racket.

That’s not really the point I was going for. I’m not saying bad companies won’t make shit products. I’m just pointing out a lamp doesn’t require alot of effort for the UL to certify, so it can’t justify a 10x increase in cost. But they must be charging a ton or more companies would just get their products certified.

Maybe unpopular opinion, but I’m on the fence about this. I slightly subscribe to the conspiracy theory that many “certified” products are just ways to stifle competition while also justifying higher prices for “certified” products.

Take UL listed electronics for example. Sure, that might mean something on a full computer full of electronics, but a lamp is two fucking wires and a bulb. It’s not complicated. Even confirming proper metals are used to prevent shrinking and expansion is not complicated. But the same $15 lamp is $100 once it’s UL certified. The math doesn’t add up.

Like I said: On the fence. Maybe it’s the best way to ensure safe products, but it also seems like a great system for lining specific peoples pockets.

EDIT: Jesus people, read my post before you get all triggered. I’m not saying shit products don’t exist.

I would add “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” to this. Everyone I know recalls that movie as: “They could all fly, and in the end, she flew away off the bridge to live happily ever after”.

I interpreted the movie as a total tragedy of the main character’s life, and, in the end, she jumps from the bridge to commit suicide.

Went down the rabbit hole on this guy a bit. He went on to participate in the CyberNinjas audit of Arizona’s ballots after the 2020 election. He claimed to have technology that could detect whether ballots had been folded in the mail, and claimed to detect bamboo in “fraudulent Chinese ballots”.

He was such a kook, the other kooks rejected him.

I went on one of those hollywood tour of homes 1.5 years ago. We pulled up to this same house and the tour guide says Justin Bieber had just moved out after renting it for a while for $200k a month. So now you know that.

Looks on par with the previous movies. I predict some funny bits will make it watchable but otherwise it will be unremarkable.

Something isn’t right with this article. I’m suspect:

• Type 1 is where your islet cells die off and you lose insulin production. Type 2 means your insulin production is fine, but your cells are resistant to the insulin. A Type 2 should have plenty of islet cells so adding more doesn’t seem like it would do anything. Your body should regulate those cells to output the same amount of insulin as before.

• This same treatment has been done in Type 1s already. It’s not new. The problem is their body eventually kills off the transplanted cells and you have to do it again. Plus, you have to take immune suppressing drugs forever.

• “Despite a kidney transplant, his pancreas still doesn’t produce insulin.” - This is just nonsense.

I’m no expert in this subject either, but a theoretical limit could be beyond 200x - depending on the data.

For example, a basic compression approach is to use a lookup table that allows you to map large values to smaller lookup ids. So, if the possible data only contains 2 values: One consisting of 10,000 letter 'a’s. The other is 10,000 letter 'b’s. We can map the first to number 1 and the second to number 2. With this lookup in place, a compressed value of “12211” would uncompress to 50,000 characters. A 10,000x compression ratio. Extrapolate that example out and there is no theoretical maximum to the compression ratio.

But that’s when the data set is known and small. As the complexity grows, it does seem logical that a maximum limit would be introduced.

So, it might be possible to achieve 200x compression, but only if the complexity of the data set is below some threshold I’m not smart enough to calculate.
