A handful of games need slight nudges one way or another but overwhelmingly it just works. Way better than it was just a few years ago.

Must be some real easy cheats for apex on linux.
I just want all windows games to run on linux with equivalent performance and without anticheat hurdles. After that happens i’m done with windows.
Honestly, i’m really not that far off as-is. Steam Deck already runs most of my library, it’s just the games that don’t work with a controller that are a problem.
Pretty much the only one i’m still happy with is crunchyroll. They don’t fuck around despite being basically the only game in town.
Netflix I pay for begrudgingly but if they raise the price substantially or add mandatory ads EVER they are gonna be gone. I’m already pissed they are axing Kaos, like so many other good shows before it.
Already axed prime last year due to them adding ads, I don’t even miss the expedited delivery because all the big box stores deliver for free, some even same day, at equivalent prices.
Disney recently boned me out of account sharing, so my plex server is getting pimped out. $1000 buy gets you substantial NAS storage for 6-7 years. That’s ~$14/mo if you replace nothing for 6 years. By the time drives start dying the sizes double and you can expand your raid as they die off one by one.
Anywho, Plex servers (and other FOSS alternatives now) usually have no problems transcoding and serving multiple 1080p and 4k streams concurrently. Plus you can download media for offline play within the respective server’s app on all kinds of devices, and for plex the server owner doesn’t need to license guests. That being said, non-plex options are what i’d go with because they are as good or better without any license cost. I just use plex because I bought a lifetime sub before the alternatives were mature. It’s nice having a library that only grows, never shrinks. No temporary licenses or content runs so I can have a massive backlog and not worry if I don’t get around to it for years. Just a lot of wins, no downsides that I know of.
Plus like 50% tax right? Isn’t that how Australia works?
People make throwaways all the time for services like this. I expect lemmy to be no different.
Monthly active users would be a better statistic to track imo. That gives you a real idea as to how big the community is.
Anecdotally, content wise does seem better than a few months ago. Unfortunately lots of it seems to be highly polarizing and hateful stuff when you look at all communities. Othering seems to be as strong as ever, if not stronger. Probably because hate groups can just setup their own instances or take over parts of existing ones without much blowback like they would get on other sites.
I really hate graphs that start at 99% and top off at 100%
The gain is really next to nothing in the 2 months shown in this graph. It goes from ~1,456,000 to 1,468,000… which is a 00.8% increase, less than 1%.
I mean in trumps court of law musk can’t lose.
If dumpy wins, for sure no class action.
If dumpy loses, his Supreme Court will still side with the conservative side anyway, so probably still no class action.
Mozilla isn’t google. They took it back and encouraged the guy to reach out in the future if any issues arise.
BFD, it’s not like they banned his account, just one gimped extension that doesn’t do the whole ad blocking experience and even then only because he didn’t do anything to try and reverse it. Then after it’s restored he throws his tantrum and removes it.
With all the extensions out there false positive detections of malicious apps are going to happen. Nobody has unlimited resources to hire boatloads of devs to review every single line of code of every extension for every update done. That’s an insane expectation.
We’ve never had real communism.
I don’t think human nature will allow for true communism at scale. Like all political organizations beyond a handful of people, corruption is de facto present and completely at odds with the theory.
People can swear up and down that it’s doable but I truly don’t think it could ever be by humans. We are too selfish.
I mean, the argument that communism is slavery to the state is a real and valid argument as of 2024.
It’s not like capitalism is any less a form of slavery, except instead of stealing from everybody to give to everybody it steals from everybody and gives it all to insurance companies and other businesses benefiting oligarchs. The whole system is slavery under another name, work for the luxury of having a place to sleep at night so that your owner can live a comfortable life. Slavery to many masters who use your body for their gains.
There’s not going to be a system that you’re not a slave to though, unless we somehow find a way to trivially convert matter to energy and vice versa and build a utopia where machines do everything for us… and we all share the rewards. All hail science fiction communism? (and keep in mind science fiction keeps becoming reality! Just don’t hold your breath for this in our lifetimes.)
Small claims court? Get a refund for all money spent since they took your stuff and ran?
it’s factored into your total compensation so you’re still the one paying.
I never understand why so many people assume insurance is “free” from the employer or that they pay 0-1000 per week/month. What we see is the tip of the iceberg. Insurance companies are perfectly lucrative and they pay tons and TONS of money to workers that make sure they make as much as possible.
80% of premium revenues must be spent on treatment, the other 20% is what they have to profit off of. If they don’t spend 80% of the premiums on treatment they MUST refund excess earnings. See: https://www.healthcare.gov/health-care-law-protections/rate-review/
This means if they took in 100 billion in premiums in a year, they MUST spend 80 billion dollars on treatments. The 20 billion left over is where they can make money. So they will make sure 4/5ths of everything they make goes into treatment so they never give refunds and they maximize potential profits. If they can convince companies to raise premiums 10% next year, costs will rise 10%, profits will rise 10%. It’s so obviously designed to raise the cost of premiums and treatments at the expense of all else it’s insane.
They also don’t spend a dime over 80% of what they make if they can help it. There’s where claim rejections come in. They have mathematicians figuring out the ideal numbers and those guys make stupid amounts of money.
I like the board game community there. Plus that fried chicken place by the convention center. That’s about it.
Lol this guy is going to get an apology and the city is going to be wearing the egg on their face.
Horrible optics. What in the world are they even thinking?
anything else provided by Microsoft has a better 3rd party alternative if the user wants it at all.
Imo this is what has held microsoft back. They never really focused on the user market. All their software is pay-for-me bullshit offering promo prices for user tier education subscriptions that never retain users. Once you’re out of school you’re gonna cancel office sub, pirate it, or simply use google docs because everyone can use it without paying. Office is for businesses only.
Google lets you use their version of office without asking for any money. They give you storage that integrates with it and doesn’t nag you to subscribe or purchase a license to do things and they don’t nag you to use it. Their email is actually good, has good spam protection. You can use google mail for small businesses without issue too whereas hotmail or outlook.com look sketchy by comparison.
Microsoft has had so many missteps in their headlong charge believing they are the only game in town. Android has a bigger market share and a lot of people just use their phone as a computer today on a global scale.
In the US, Apple keeps gaining market share. iOS is the #1 operating system here but fairly neck and neck with windows. MacOS is a little under half of Windows too, so combined Apple is a big majority OS wise. Apple isn’t charging for updates on any of it’s OSes, unlike all of microsoft’s. The mobile hardware division makes way more money than laptops and desktops.
On a long enough of a timeline it seems inevitable that microsoft’s OS marketshare dominance will evaporate. It looks like only MacOS is here today as a realistic alternative since Linux is a steaming hot mess for end user computing.
So find the level of wage after taxes that provides for what a waiter would make with their current wage + average tip per hour over the course of an entire year… Then pay them that.
I don’t think we should keep things the same way just because a population can evade taxes. Why should some jobs not report income? why is that ok?
Whatabout all the people who stiff their waiter/waitress because they don’t believe in tipping? Anyone who has ever had the job knows this happens and the same people have no qualms showing up again and again and doing the same thing.
What about all the businesses that steal tips from the employees and keep them? It’s illegal but they do it anyway. No tips? no employer tip theft.
Countless reasons against tipping. There’s really only a couple for it: Businesses can avoid paying their staff and the staff leech off of everyone else via untaxed income and government support programs (food stamps, medicaid) because their w2 is below poverty wages.
It signifies that chinese made games about chinese/buddhist mythology will be incredibly popular in China.
People go nuts for soulsclones regardless but given that this is probably the very first chinese mythology soulslike with professional production values no one should be at all surprised that it sells in China and abroad. Also the fact that it’s cheaper than china than any other region on earth is certainly a factor in it’s sales.
As of right now, of it’s overall 354,187 steam reviews, only 14,757 are in english.
Keep in mind that the US and Western Europe combined have about a third of China’s population.
Isn’t there something that says rich weddings lead to quick divorces?
No better way to be sure that your partner is frugal and not in it for the money than a cheap wedding. Your interests have to be aligned or it never works.
I would just use my desktop for that use case. There’s still a small minority of games that just don’t work via proton but it’s really a minority.
I’ve also seen a handful of games with linux builds that just don’t run properly because they update the game but don’t do enough QA to the linux build or simply don’t put resources towards linux issues to the same degree that windows gets.
