I got help here on Lemmy to identify what this is. It turns out it’s ice, that forms on dead wood but not the bark and is initiated by a fungus that lives there. Very interrsring reading
Oh heavens. I thought it said hair LICE and thought that was a disgusting close up of the flakiest scalp and most confusing hair follicles ever.
Very cool. Did you only see this on this one branch or was there more around it?
There were loads that day but had never seen them before. Apparently they need quite specific conditions to grow. I took some more pictures
So cool. I would love to see macro photos of the “roots” of the ice.
I’ve seen this often in the woods around here. When you touch it, it is… barely there for lack of a better description. Really, really little mass fluffed up to the max.
