The headline makes it seem like it’s just gamers but it’s more about the overall gender divide in South Korea. It’s a very interesting read. Men in South Korea feel like they’re struggling to get by and women wanting fairer treatment is being seen as wanting to make things even more difficult for men. It seems like it’s heading towards a tipping point.

One big issue is that military service is mandatory for men only so they feel they are being disadvantaged doing it while their women counterparts are getting degrees and established in the job market. That part seems like it could be solved by making it compulsary for both sexes like Israel does - assuming they want to keep up military service. I don’t see how they can stop given their neighbours.

I just looked a bit more into this. There is a whole history of scrutinizing Nexon’s material and then screen capping single frames of animation to “prove” they are sneaking in this “misandrist” hand gesture. Looking at a back log of these this is on the level of those people presenting a single frame of someone like Beyonce on stage, and claiming what they captured clearly shows she is making satanic hand gestures.

Another example: JaeJae was promoting chocolate and held a piece between two fingers - that was taken as clearly a sign of her hate for all men.

These guys know they don’t have to interact with shit they don’t like right? If a game has something you don’t like not only do you not have to play the game, but nobody is going to force you to do it. It’s not like they were gonna play it anyway.

I mean, have you encountered these Real Gamers™ before? They go out of their way to be enraged at this stuff. It’s all deliberate.

God, that happened with a friend of mine who we drifted apart during covid. He was never really a feminist in the first place, but started consuming gamer gate shit. Doesn’t have time to play games, but likes to listen to outrage.

Rage is the only thing that makes them feel :<

Sad pathetic lives of socially separated and economically distraught young adults finding joy in the worst of humans ;(

The best part about this particular situation is the graph you can draw that shows an inverse correlation between their rage and their junk volume.

Nothing more disarming than “wow! You sure seem personally impacted by that allegation, is that a reaction that’s happening often from lovers, friends or very close family members?”

Perhaps a) social media should not be anonymous and b) death threats should be illegal. I know I’m stating super obvious things here but given how this is still a thing…

      a) social media should not be anonymous

I believe anonymous social media can work but only up to a certain size. Current system opens up societies to fabricated influence campaigns by the oligarchs, domestic and foreign state agencies, all kinds of organised whackos and just regular assholes with zero accountability. Whole setup is dying from a thousand cuts and at current going rate it doesn’t have much time left.

There’s a marked difference between being the only non-anonymous person in a group of anonymous people and being a non-anonymous person in a group of other non-anonymous people.

In other words, no way am I even pretending to be that brave.
